English name Spotted Berrypecker is assigned to this, the split species, to reflect its female plumage. Treat as monotypic. Includes viridescens (Beehler & Pratt 2016). Formerly attributed to the genus Rhamphocharis Salvadori, 1876, but that genus is merged with Melanocharis following AviList v2025.
