Overview

Atlantic Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus swainsoni) is a species of Royal Flycatchers & Allies (Onychorhynchidae) in the order Perching Birds (Passerines).

Scientific Classification

Genus: Onychorhynchus; binomial: Onychorhynchus swainsoni; authority: (Pelzeln, 1858).

Distribution

Breeding range: South America.

Conservation Status

This taxon is listed as Extant (living) in the IOC World Bird List.

Remarks

Onychorhynchus swainsoni is split from O. coronatus (Stotz et al. 1996; BLI). Further genomic analyses support the deep divergence of swainsoni from other forms within Onychorhynchus (Harvey et al. 2020; Reyes et al. 2023), which is also vocally distinct from the other forms on the basis of calls, justifying the spit of swainsoni at the species level (WGAC).
