Breeding range: the Oriental Region. Non-breeding range: c India, Thailand, Laos and s Vietnam.

Remarks
Treat as monotypic. Includes ssp. "stanfordi" Vaughan and Jones, 1913, a variable hybrid (Clements 2023).
